Books to Die for Tour Stop : John Connolly

Books to Die For Tour Stop South Portland Maine
October 18, 2012 : 7pm
(John Connolly and I)

On Thursday, October 18th , I met John Connolly for the fourth time. I arrived, rocking my Burning Soul T-Shirt that he gave me last year. I was, of course, excited when I got there and was able to snag seats for my fiancé and myself in the front row. Someone even asked me, “Are you the official John Connolly cheering squad?” Yup, that would be me! They continued, “Where did you get your T-Shirt?”
“Oh, he gave it to me,” I answered like it was a normal thing.
“Are you related to him?”
“No, I have met him three times; he is awesome.” (Thinking: That would be flipping awesome, don’t I wish.) I think I gushed some more because her response to that was: “I can see why he gave you a T-shirt.” I guess I sort of praise him when I talk about him, but I can’t help it. He is awesome and so friendly and personable. When he saw me in the crowd, he waved at me; and, when he was coming up front to speak, he said, “Hi, Christie; how are you?” My brain went OMG OMG HE REMEMBERED MY NAME! I was seriously impressed. I met him three times before, but the last time was a year ago; and he meets a ton of people. I thought he would recognize me again, but I honestlydidn’t expect him to remember my name. I was sitting there smiling like an idiot, doing a happy dance in my head while the librarian introduced him and Julie Spencer-Fleming, who was also speaking.

The entertainment started right off; the library had these low, comfy-looking seats set up for them, but other than the people in the front row, they wouldn’t have been able to be seen. The whole time John Connolly spoke, I was almost always laughing. He is absolutely captivating and charismatic when he speaks. He talks very fast and so easily transforms whatever he is talking about and makes it funny or makes a joke about it. Inappropriate jokes - yup, he does that also, but I won’t repeat them. I will go to every event he does in Maine. I don’t care what he is talking about; I always enjoy listening to him. He is a ton of fun. Oh, and did I mention... HE REMEMBERED MY NAME! I still can’t get over that.
So, this event was about the new book Books to Die For that he helped put together and edit (and he says he will never take on anything like this again, but he was also glad that he did it). I’m not quoting because I can’t remember the exact words he used, but it was along those lines.

Forget books to die for... how about authors to die for, or at least authors you should meet before you die? John Connolly is definitely one of them; of course, if you don’t have a sense of humor, that may not be a good idea, but for most of us that do, you have to meet him. Even minus the humor, he is worth meeting because he is such a nice person. His parents must have brought him up right or something because he isn’t mean, arrogant, or full of himself at all - just a genuine, down-to-earth guy. If he ever comes to your town, seriously - make the time.  It is more than worth it.

I also still can’t get over how personable he is. He seriously cares; he has millions of fans, but he cared to remember me and remember my name. He was even trying to remember how to spell my name - he was wrong, which is totally fine, but he cared, so hey - maybe next time he will even know how to spell it. I’m totally not holding him to that, though. I have had teachers spell my name wrong for an entire year before and even family members, so if a national best-selling author just remembers my name and never knows how to spell it, I’m still ecstatic.

We also got to hear the story of how John Connolly ended up in Maine in the first place. It is a funny story and, even though he thinks we are all insane in Maine,  he keeps coming back.
The event was great and I will have to check out Books to Die For which is essays from popular authors today about mystery/crime books that influenced them. “Every author was a reader first” was how the concept of the book was being introduced. If you are a mystery/crime fan, this book is a great way to find out what your favorite authors' favorite books are.
(Autographing my books)

After the event he autographed books. I got two Charlie Parker books autographed and I also got Every Dead Thing, the first book in the Charlie Parker series, autographed for Michele from A Belle’s Tales. I talked so much about him she asked me to get her a book autographed for her, so of course I did. John talked to me and wasn’t offended that I didn’t get to finish Every Dead Thing myself before the event because of my insane school schedule. I really, really wanted to but just didn’t have the time. He gave me a set of cool post cards based on his Charlie Parker series, and he also gave me a set to give Michele. Even though I didn’t buy Books to Die For yet, he gave me a set of the trading cards anyways. Have I mentioned that he is awesome!?

He also talked to my fiancé, asked him his name, shook his hand, and congratulated us on being engaged.

Thank you, John Connolly, for doing another event in Maine and I hope to see you here next year! Thanks for being so awesome; I will continue to get excited about you and I look forward to finishing Every Dead Thing and also reading the entire Charlie Parker series.

With most authors, I read the books and then want to meet them, but in this case, it was the opposite. I met the author and it made me want to read his books.

I know my post is totally gushy, but I can’t help it. I had a fantastic time and I can’t wait until I can see John Connolly again. Seriously, if you are reading this, you need to meet him at some point!

Teaser Tuesday (9)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along!

Every Dead Thing by John Connolly

Hailed internationally as a page-turner in a league with the fiction of Thomas Harris, this lyrical and terrifying bestseller is the stunning achievement of an "extravagantly gifted" (Kirkus Reviews) new novelist. John Connolly superbly taps into the tortured mind and gritty world of former NYPD detective Charlie "Bird" Parker, tormented by the brutal, unsolved murders of his wife and young daughter. Driven by visions of the dead, Parker tracks a serial killer from New York City to the American South, and finds his buried instincts -- for love, survival, and, ultimately, for killing -- awakening as he confronts a monster beyond imagining...

*TEASER* "Why did you shoot him?"
"You weren't around," I replied, my teeth gritted in pain. "If you'd been here I'd have shot you instead."

-Every Dead Thing by John Connolly, pg. 21

Some of you may have seen me post this quote on facebook or twitter yesterday, but I thought it would be an awesome teaser tuesday post since I haven't done one in a few weeks. College has been kicking my butt and I had been reading the same book for over a month. I finally got to finish and am now starting Every Dead Thing by John Connolly in hopes to finish it for the 18th. John Connolly is on a book tour and is coming here and am excited to get to go to another one of his events. A lot of you may already know that I have met him 3 times and absolutely love talking to him. I'm really excited and am looking forward to reading more of this book, that quote was a good indication that I will love it.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoyed my teaser!

John Connolly at University of Southern Maine

John Connolly was exceptional November 15, 2011. He came to USM (University of Southern Maine) to speak. He had no problem holding the audience’s attention for what he called a lecture. With him speaking it could be called that. He decided to speak about something he thought was important to share; his list of the 20 must read mystery novels. Instead of talking about him-self, which that audience would have been fine with, he chose to speak about other authors and literature that he felt was important.  He decided to do this because he came to realize that a lot of people and a lot of authors have only read current mystery titles. John Connolly is very charismatic and you could feel his passion for these books. He even said, “without some of them he probably wouldn’t be an author”, though I find that hard to believe.

If you are interested in the list of 20 mysteries you must read before you die, here is the link, http://johnconnollybooks.posterous.com/twenty-mysteries-you-must-read-before-you-die.
John Connolly is a great public speaker and has this way of speaking that is just captivating. He makes you think and laugh at the same time. He is also very personable when you talk to him. He is appreciative of his audience and fans, not taking it for granted. John Connolly is a remarkable man and author. I have not met anyone like him. He is a bestselling author and nowhere do you find arrogance or superiority over another person. He loves what he does and seems to love the people around him. I would just love to sit and talk to him for hours.

When I went to get my books signed he said he remembered me from Borders when I asked. He could have just been saying it but I think he actually did. I’m sure it’s hard since he has a ton of fans. He was extremely nice and thanked me for coming and ended up giving me a T-Shirt after talking with him. It was above and beyond any expectations I had. I expected it to be great but he still managed to make it even better.

The Swag I got :)

A Bumper sticker :) I love that John Connolly loves Maine :) The Great Lost Bear is a Maine restaurant... oh yah :)
The T-Shirt He gave me-front and back :)
Pins that shall decorate my school bag ;)

One of the three books I got signed. Some of them were a bit hard to decipher what he wrote :-P

I hope everyone has a chance to meet him at some point!

The Gates Review

The Gates By John Connolly

★★★★☆

The Gates by John Connolly was a great book. I got this book after meeting John Connolly at Borders. When he walked into the store I had no idea who he was, I just thought he was another customer. The next thing I knew he was at the customer service desk signing the entire stack of his books. I ended up talking to him. He was so down to earth and easy to talk to and very funny! After meeting him I decided I would read one of his books and ended up picking this one. It took me a while to finally get to reading it. I found out he is having a reading Tuesday 11/15/11 at the University of Southern Maine so I finally sat down and read it. I have to say meeting an author and having them be really nice and down to earth like Josh Connolly was when I met him can make someone want to pick up their books. I probably would never have picked this book up if it wasn’t for that, but I’m glad I did because I was not disappointed.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book but I was surprised by any standards. The author added a nice touch by adding footnotes throughout the book giving the reader further information and most of the time resulting in making me laugh. The author has a way with words that brought a smile to my face and just made me laugh out loud. This was a very fun book to read. He created a great voice in the story. The reader is also able to see multiple different points of views in the story so you get to see closer glimpses to different characters. I enjoyed this, it even had me feeling for the demon Nurd.

The story follows a very intelligent boy named Samuel Johnson and his dog. Samuel is a unique boy and decided to start Halloween early. He starts and ends his attempt to do so at the Abernathy’s house. After Mr. Abernathy shuts the door in Samuels face he goes back to his wife and friends and accidently opens a portal that a strong demon comes out and takes over Mrs. Abernathy’s body and more demons come and take over the bodies of Mr. Abernathy and his friends. Samuel sees this though a window and when he decided to run away Mrs. Abernathy sees him. Now she is after Samuel and no one will believe him when he tries to tell what he saw. It is up to Samuel to stop hell on earth from happening because he is the only one that knows.
